May update

Last weekend, Chris extensively photographed five of the six gardens selected for the October Spectacular.

There are many excellent photos, that showcase the quality of the gardens. Chris was accompanied by Jane Munro who will be providing editorial comment for each of the gardens.

The focus is now on production of a good quality brochure that will promote the event and complement the planned, multimedia advertising campaign.

The project is progressing well and will soon enter an exciting phase.

The six gardens are:

1. Graham Peterson: Hillgrove house

2. Dallas and Karol Lawry: Shearstone

3. Andy and Deb Strachan’s At Oakey Creek

4. Claire and Greg Toole

5. Ian and Marjie Livingstone – Blevins

6. Virginia and Doug Moffat

MGS Updates

The Mudgee Garden Spectacular is an initiative of the Rotary Club of Mudgee, in collaboration with Mudgee CWA evening branch and support/assistance from members of Mudgee Garden Club.

At last week’s meeting Garry Connelly briefed members on the status of the Mudgee Garden Spectacular (MGS). Garry explained there are three main stages; selection of gardens, publicity and successful delivery of the event.

The first stage is almost complete and the MGS inaugural event will showcase six beautifully developed private gardens around Mudgee and surrounding areas. It will be held between 10.00am to 3.00pm on Satur-day 13th and Sunday 14th October. Mudgee CWA (evening branch) will be providing morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea at one of the gardens, “Hillgrove House”.

The current focus is on finalisation of the MGS website and preparation of brochures. This will be followed by a multimedia advertising campaign. Although still under development, Sof gave members a view of the dedicated MGS website and talked through the design and information that will be included in the final version.

In summary the MGS Committee are doing a great job of organising the event. Well done everyone.

Breakthrough

We welcomed Pamela Matheson and Diana Anderson from CWA evening branch, joining the project in last December. CWA will provide food and coffee at the event. Thanks to suggestion made by Pamela Matheson, the project is now officially called Mudgee Garden Spectacular.

Having discussed through a list of gardens provided by the garden club, we are blessed with the availability of six gardens selected for the show. The coordinators have approached the owners and the owners have confirmed their involvement in the project. On this occasion we would like to thank them:

  • Oakey Creek
  • Shearstone
  • Claire and Greg Toole
  • Virginia and Doug Moffat
  • Blevins
  • Hillgrove House

The board of Mudgee Rotary had finally approved funding for various expenses, including the development of this website.

Garden Festival Set for Spring

By Garry Connelly OAM

Here’s some exciting news for all garden lovers, environmental lovers and just plain lovers. Mudgee Rotary have plans well under way for a fabulous garden festival in spring. After some vigorous discussion, we have now settled on a title for the event, the Mudgee Garden Spectacular.

Six local iconic gardens have been selected for inspection over the weekend of October 13 – 14. The local branch of the CWA have stepped up with support by offering to provide lunch at two of the gardens.

Proceeds from the event will be distributed to various local organisations who provide support for community health and youth education. All you need do for now is save the date in your diary.

Dates confirmed with Mudgee Regional Tourism

Club’s secretary Ross Hearne had approached Mudgee Tourism. Weekend of 14/15 Oct 2018 is basically ok. Nothing in Mudgee but Sculptures in the Garden the week before. The  Gulgong Mining Festival is likely on (unconfirmed). Marketing people at Mudgee Tourism thought it would be ok.

For us, as a charity, promotion from Mudgee Tourism is free for one event per year.

These dates are now booked in the region’s calendar of events

Discussion of the concept of an open garden in Mudgee

On the 7th November 2017 meeting, we welcomed John Bentley as our guest speaker. John is the chairman of a number of organisations in Mudgee, which include the Mudgee Garden Club, the National Trust in Mudgee and the steering group for the development of the new $70+ million Mudgee hospital.

On this particular occasion, John talked about organising and managing an open garden weekend. Several months ago, club’s president Sof had discussed with John about the viability of this project.
John articulated his concept of an Open Garden weekend and gave Club members the opportunity to pose questions on how we may deliver a successful annual event beginning in Spring 2018.

John gave a thought provoking presentation including a summary of the benefits that he considered our Club could bring to the table.

In meantime, club’s secretary Ross Hearne had been researching various avenue and contacting rotary clubs in Australia that have been running similar projects. These information were feed-backed to in our club’s meeting, enabling us to assess the viability of the project.
